International data-sharing rules that took effect earlier this year mean SARS now has visibility into transactions it simply didn’t have before.
Understanding why this mistake is so common matters because it is not a failure of intelligence or effort. It is a failure of information.

The assessment looks finished. SARS’s eFiling system presents your auto-assessment with summary, a calculation, and a refund or payment figure. Nothing in the user experience signals that the return might be missing significant deductions. The average taxpayer sees a refund figure and assumes it is the right one.

Most people don’t know what they don’t know. The deductions that SARS misses — home office, out-of-pocket medical, RA timing gaps, travel logbooks — are not commonly discussed. Most taxpayers have never been told these deductions exist, let alone that they must be claimed manually.

Doing nothing feels safe. Because the auto-assessment finalises automatically, inaction feels like the path of least resistance. There is no moment where a taxpayer feels they made a decision. The return simply closes, and the money is left behind.

There is no second notification. Once your auto-assessment finalises, SARS does not follow up to tell you that you missed deductions. You are assessed on the figures provided, your refund is calculated at that level, and the file is closed.

The solution is not complicated. But it requires acting not assuming the auto-assessment is correct and moving on.

Step 1: Do not assume your auto-assessment is correct

When it arrives in your eFiling profile from 1 July, treat it as a first draft, not a final document. Log in, open it, and review every figure carefully before deciding whether any changes are required.

Step 2: Gather your supporting documentation.

Before 1 July, collect your IRP5, medical aid tax certificate, RA IT3(a) certificate, investment income statements, and any receipts for out-of-pocket medical costs. If you have a travel logbook, locate it. If you worked from home, calculate your office area ratio and annual home costs.

Step 3: Compare the assessment to your documentation.

Check each figure on the assessment against your records. Pay particular attention to: – The medical aid figure — does it match your scheme’s tax certificate? – The RA figure — does it match your IT3(a) certificate exactly? – The income figure — does it match your IRP5? – Missing deductions — home office, travel, medical out-of-pocket, donations

Step 4: If anything doesn’t match — submit an updated tax return.

If your auto-assessment is incomplete or contains incorrect information, you can submit an updated ITR12 through SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp. This is a normal part of the filing process and allows you to ensure your return accurately reflects your income, deductions and tax position.

Individual non-provisional taxpayers generally have until 23 October 2026 to submit their return.

Step 5: Use a registered tax practitioner.

This step is optional — but it is where most South Africans recover the money they would otherwise leave behind. A registered tax practitioner reviews your assessment against your complete financial picture, identifies every deduction you qualify for, and submits a return that SARS processes without query.

To fully understand the current operational pressure on SARS, it is important to consider the introduction of the Two-Pot Retirement System.

Effective 1 September 2024, South Africa fundamentally restructured the way retirement savings are accessed and managed. Under this system, retirement fund contributions are divided into three components, designed to balance long-term preservation of retirement savings with limited access to funds during a member’s lifetime.

A key feature of the reform is the introduction of regulated access to a portion of retirement savings prior to retirement. However, any withdrawal from a member’s savings pot cannot be processed without first obtaining a tax directive from SARS.
Importantly, these withdrawals are treated as ordinary income. The amount withdrawn is added to the individual’s taxable income for the relevant tax year and taxed at their marginal income tax rate. This differs significantly from retirement lump sum withdrawals, which are taxed according to preferential retirement tax tables.

As a result, the system has led to a substantial increase in directive applications, placing additional operational demand on SARS.

When the Two-Pot system launched in September 2024, hundreds of thousands of withdrawal applications were submitted almost simultaneously, requiring an unprecedented volume of directive requests from SARS. The system was tested as never before. Now, with the recent enhancements introducing instability, this high-volume environment makes the current errors even more disruptive.

At TTT Financial Group, we are seeing three major shifts play out across our client base right now.

This is the single biggest shift in how SARS operates, and most taxpayers are not aware of just how advanced it has become.

SARS has moved decisively into AI-driven compliance. The system now uses artificial intelligence, real-time data matching, and automated risk profiling to assess taxpayers — not only when you submit your return, but continuously throughout the year.

Here is what that means in practice:

Your data is being cross-referenced constantly. SARS receives third-party data from employers, banks, medical aids, retirement annuity providers, and other financial institutions. This information is matched against what you declare. If there is a discrepancy — even a small one — it is flagged automatically.

The margin for error has shrunk significantly. What may have gone unnoticed in previous years can now trigger a verification request, an administrative penalty, or an audit within days of filing.

SARS is no longer reactive. It does not wait for you to make a mistake and report it. The system actively identifies inconsistencies before you are even aware of them.

What this means for you: accuracy and proper structuring have never been more important. If your records are inconsistent, your deductions are unsupported, or your tax affairs have not been properly reviewed, your risk exposure in 2026 is materially higher than it was three years ago.

The taxpayers who are most at risk are those who have been filing on their own without professional oversight, or whose tax has not been reviewed against the current compliance environment.

One of the most common questions we are hearing from clients right now is some version of this:

“Why does my tax feel higher this year? My income hasn’t really changed that much.”

The answer, in most cases, is bracket creep — and it is one of the least visible forms of tax increase there is.

Here is how it works in plain terms: South Africa’s personal income tax brackets are adjusted periodically, but these adjustments do not always keep pace with inflation. When your salary increases in line with inflation — meaning your actual purchasing power has not improved — you may nonetheless move into a higher bracket or have a larger proportion of your income taxed at a higher rate.

The result: SARS takes a bigger slice of your income, even though you are not meaningfully wealthier than you were last year.

The 2026 Budget Speech included some bracket adjustments, but for many taxpayers these adjustments were insufficient to fully offset inflationary income growth. If your income increased by 6% but the brackets only adjusted by 3%, the difference is effectively a tax increase you never voted for and may not have noticed.

The second layer of this problem is unclaimed deductions. Many taxpayers — particularly those who are self-employed or earning commission income — are not fully utilising the deductions available to them. This includes:

Retirement annuity contributions

Medical aid and out-of-pocket medical expenses

Home office expenses (for qualifying taxpayers)

Vehicle costs and travel deductions (for commission earners)

Business-related expenses for sole proprietors

If these are not correctly structured and claimed, your effective tax rate is higher than it needs to be. In many cases we review, the difference between what a client is paying and what they should be paying runs to tens of thousands of rands annually.

It is not.

This is the window in which the quality of your tax submission is largely determined.
Identify your deductions. Review what you spent in the tax year that may be claimable. If you are not sure what qualifies, this is the time to ask — not in July.

Review your provisional tax position. If you are self-employed, running a business, or earning commission income, your second provisional tax payment was due in February. Reviewing the accuracy of that estimate now allows you to plan for the third payment and avoid penalties.

Assess your tax structure. If your income has changed materially, or your life circumstances have shifted — a new property, a change in employment, a growing business — your tax structure may need to be reviewed. Small structural changes made now can meaningfully reduce your liability before the year is out.

Check your supporting documentation. SARS’s AI-driven verification process means supporting documents are more important than ever. Ensure your IRP5, medical aid certificates, RA certificates, and any other supporting records are complete and consistent.

The 2026 South African Budget Speech has been tabled, and while it offers some welcome relief, it also introduces higher living costs and stricter compliance expectations.

At TTT Financial Group, we’ve looked beyond the headlines to unpack what this really means for your personal finances, your business, and your long-term security.

Roscoe Dekker, CEO of TTT Financial Group, shares his perspective:

“This year’s Budget Speech sends a more encouraging message for South Africa and particularly for SMEs and entrepreneurs.

There is a clear recognition that small and growing businesses are the engine of economic growth. The focus on support, stability, and measured fiscal management creates a platform for those who are prepared to expand responsibly.

For our TTT clients, this is an opportunity season.

When government signals stability and structured growth, it rewards people that are compliant, well-advised, and strategically positioned. Our clients who will benefit most are those who treat tax planning, financial structure, and risk management as core business disciplines, not afterthoughts.

TTT has never been better positioned to optimise your tax and financial structure. As a group, we bring together specialists in financial planning, accounting, tax, and short-term insurance. That means we don’t look at your financial position in isolation, we align every moving part of your financial world to support growth.

This Budget creates opportunity. Our role is to ensure you maximise it with clarity, confidence, and structure.” – Roscoe Dekker
