How it works: Part of each foreign dividend is exempt under section 10B, which caps the effective rate at 20% for individuals. Foreign tax withheld can be credited against the South African tax on the same dividend, but not beyond it.

Why is my effective rate lower than 20%?
The 20% maximum applies at the 45% bracket. Lower earners pay less.
Can a foreign tax credit give me a refund?
No. It can only reduce the South African tax on that dividend to zero.
