Why commission earners overpay SARS

It isn’t your fault. It’s how the system treats irregular income.

01

PAYE is set for steady pay

Employers estimate tax on commission as if every month looked like this one. In strong months that can mean too much PAYE comes off, and the difference only comes back if your return claims it.

02

Deductions go unclaimed

Above the 50% line you can claim the costs of earning your commission: travel, phone, marketing and more. Without a logbook and records, most people leave thousands of rand with SARS.

03

Commission returns get checked

Expense claims attract SARS verification. We prepare every claim with the supporting documents ready, so a query is a quick reply, not a crisis.

Filing season closes 23 October 2026. File early and get your refund sooner.

What we claim back for commission earners

Every claim must be a real cost of earning your commission, and backed by records. We check what applies to your role before anything goes on your return.

Who counts as a commission earner for tax?

SARS treats you as a commission earner for expense purposes when commission (code 3606 on your IRP5) makes up more than half of your total remuneration for the tax year. Below that, most work expenses can’t be claimed.
Fill in the sign-up form on this page. A commission-tax specialist contacts you to review your situation and start your return — the whole process can be done online, no office visit needed.
SARS pays first-in, first-out. Filing early in the season generally means your refund lands within weeks; returns filed near the deadline join a much longer queue.
Your IRP5/IT3(a), medical aid and retirement annuity certificates, and your travel logbook if you receive a travel allowance or car allowance. Your specialist confirms exactly what applies to you.
Your specialist gives you a clear quote before any work starts, based on how complex your return is.
Yes. We assist with outstanding returns, SARS debt and getting compliant while minimising penalties. The sooner you act, the smaller the exposure.
A tax directive is SARS’s instruction to your employer on how much tax to deduct from irregular income like commission, instead of the standard averaging method that usually over-deducts. If you qualify, we apply for a fixed tax directive on your behalf so the right amount comes off each month — meaning less overpayment to claim back later.
